Bachelor of Information Technology
The School offers approximately thirty places per year in the three year Bachelor of Information Technology. Each student receives a scholarship averaging $10 500 per year.
The scholarships are provided by 28 of Australias leading information technology suppliers and users, including leading computer firms, banks, manufacturing, finance and insurance companies, management consultants, airlines, public sector, the retail and petroleum industries, and telecommunications and the media. During the course each student spends two six month periods working with two of the sponsors. Most students work for a sponsor on graduation, although there is no obligation to do so.
Bachelor of Science (Computing Science) Cadetships
The Bachelor of Science (Computing Science) is offered on a full or part-time basis and takes four years if studied full time. The NSW TAB and St George Bank, both offer some cadetships to this course. The student works for the TAB or the Bank for two years and studies part-time. Then the student studies full-time for two years on full pay.
All students in the full-time Bachelor of Science (Computing Science) spend the third year of the four year course in paid employment in the information technology industry in a wide range of companies, both in Australia, and occasionally overseas.
Many of the employers then offer students cadetship and/or some form of paid work during a students final year.
Accounting at UTS
Which business course can offer a year of full-time work experience, regular contact with senior managers at some of Australias leading companies, an assured job upon graduation, and pays students $10 000 per year tax-free to study?
The answer is the Bachelor of Accounting at the University of Technology, Sydney, a course specially designed in a joint venture between UTS and major employers to produce tomorrows business leaders.
The Bachelor of Accounting is a three year degree incorporating two separate half-years of full-time industry training.
While the course is a specialist accounting qualification, students can choose a second major or sub-majors from a wide range of related business disciplines.
These can include banking, economics, finance, international business management, marketing or tourism.
A major feature of the course is that Bachelor of Accounting students study and socialise together during the three years of the program and are not lost in the big crowd at university.
During the industry semester Bachelor of Accounting students typically work on accounting tasks or specific major projects, contributing work of real value to the sponsor organisation.
The combination of varied and carefully structured experience within organisations in different industries, together with regular dealing with senior sponsor managers, results in work experience superior to that provided by cadetships or part-time employment.
Bachelor of Accounting graduates are in extremely high demand because of the mix of work experience and personal qualities for which they are selected into the course.
The program is currently supported by 38 of Australias largest commercial, industrial and government enterprises, who annually provide more than $1 million of sponsorship.
The course is fully accredited by professional bodies ICAA and ASCPA.

After her school careers adviser mentioned the cadetships offered by accounting firms, Stephanie Lai did some homework on the Big Six accounting firms. Stephanie narrowed her preferences to three and then eventually to one - KPMG.
"When it came to my first KPMG interview, I met young people who had worked for the firm for a few years. They seemed very nice, very professional. I spoke to a number of business people and found KPMG had a good reputation. There were also lots of little thing that impressed me about KPMG - like the presentation of student information.
I wanted to work for a professional, fast-moving organisation. KPMG picks up on new ideas quickly and tries to introduce them into the firm. They also reward talent and hard work.
The transition from school to the workforce was exciting and interesting. The work experience Ive gained during the first year of my cadetship has made study more interesting and exposure to the business environment has given me a head start. My personal skill have also developed. I couldnt have gained these skills so quickly any other way. Stephanie Lai

Applications close 12 July 1997
"The first step in applying for a Bond University Vice Chancellors Scholarship, apart from the actual application form, was the aptitude test. This was intimidating, as all exams/tests are prone to be.
However, it was multi-choice, which made it a bit easier, and was impossible to to study for, which meant I didnt spend weeks beforehand worrying about it.
The successful applicants (three from each area) were flown to Bond for a weekend. This was a fun weekend, and contrary to expectations, my fellow applicants were not super geeks. They were a great bunch of people, and we all formed friendships over the weekend.
While up there, we were interviewed for one hour on Saturday morning, and spend the rest of the time sight-seeing around the Gold Coast, playing basketball, and getting to know each other.
During the weekend I also realised what a terrific uni Bond is. The architecture and atmosphere of the place have to be experienced to be fully appreciated.
While up there, we were treated like VIPs, great dinners, cordial hospitality, and were very well looked after.
It was good to see Bond for myself but sad in a way because I thought I wasnt going to get the scholarship.
The interviews were tough, but designed to bring out the best in us, not the worst.
I only applied for the scholarship at the last minute, because I believed I had no hope of getting it; but it was one of the best decisions I have ever made.
Even just for the experience of applying, it was worthwhile. I urge everyone to apply; what have you got to lose?
Paul Wicking was a successful Victorian applicant.
